Subject: Fish 98 - Oval, Norwich gig.
I've just confirmed a show at the Oval Rockhouse, Dereham road, Norwich on the 2nd May. This as some of you Uk freaks might know has been an old haunt of mine since the 93 Toile tour days and has seen many a despotic night during it's life as one of East Anglia's most famous rock venues. It was started by Chris Hiles, one of Iron Maiden's crew when he retired from road work in the late 80's. He built up a strong reputation and attracted bands of all types including Iron Maiden themselves to the venue. Sadly the owners of the lease have decided to close the venue and turn it into a family restaurant. Chris decided that as May is the last month of operating that he wanted to make it a special celebration and asked the locals what bands they wanted to play. My name came up and so as part of the wake I'm playing a one off show there on Saturday May 2nd. Tickets are 10 pounds and can be reserved by telephone on 01603748244 and fax 01603746590 or by e-mail ovalnorw at aol.com. The gig is only a 400 capacity and the locals will be out in force! As this will be the only Southern show for quite a while and the party will be a long one I suggest you go out of your way to attend! This is a sad loss to the live UK circuit and I'm afraid to say also a sign of the times in this country. The live scene is in a dreadful mess and losing one of the few East Anglian Venues means more deprivation for rock fans in an area where rock gigs are few and far between as it is. The Norwich area was always a heartland for Marillion and myself and I hope an alternative rock venue is found soon.
I understand some of you who have bought convention tickets already may feel that this show is closer and would prefer to come there rather than all the way up to Scotland. I therefore will offer full refunds to anyone who decides to go to Norwich rather than Haddington. This show has been put in at very short notice as Chris only found out 2 weeks ago that the lease was up. If you can't go then I'd appreciate if you could send an e just to wish the guys at the club well as they're obviously gutted at losing out after all the efforts they've put into building the club's reputation.
Other news - It looks as if the boys from Nazareth will be coming to the Convention and joining us onstage for a couple of numbers. Bruce Watson from Big Country will also be there as he's also joined the "Scotia Nostra" line up to record the World Cup song. Jump are confirmed as support act. Frank Usher will also be joining us on stage as well as playing on the Acoustic pub crawl.
Thanks again for putting the pressure on Viceroy. They are going crazy with all the E's and phone calls they're getting and I expect an answer next week from them as to whether or not they will pay the royalties they're due me. They can't understand why I'm doing this to them!:) Now they understand the power of freaks!:)
That's all for now apart from to tell you that the SOE sweatshirts in XL are all sold out and there's only 3 large ones left. Thanks for all your orders and for the support both verbal and financial.
Read you all soon, all the best
