We got software on our tv and surround sound to kill the sound increase when the ads come on....... :-)

Me too. They're OK, but I just never got how they were these amazing geniuses (genii?). Some of their material is good, but it is usually better when covered by other artists (IMO, YMMV, etc).

Agreed geoff and stella! i think a lot of it was just down to the musical genre of that time, so when the beatles came out, the music scene went WOW! as this took the then music secne in a totally new format/direction if you know what i mean, thus illuminating the beatles to this sort of "cult status" that people talk of today.

For me! OVERATED! :D :D No offence to beatles lovers outhere! :)

We've been over this topic before. - The Beatles might not have been the best live band in the world, or even the most talented of musicians, but as song-writers/composers, innovators and trend-setters, they were second to none, ahead of their time and certainly NOT overrated.

Yes, the British music press have been guilty of banging on about them too much for decades, and it does wear thin, when there have been many bands and artists since that have been just as influential in their own ways, but this is not the fault of the band, but those who write about them.

I'm not a fan as such. I don't have anything by The Beatles in my collection, but just because we don't enjoy listening to a particular band or style of music, that doesn't mean that that artist/band is overrated.

I don't like Mozart, but I'm not going to turn around and say he wasn't a very good composer am I?

True Paul! point taken! - when thinking about what you said, guess what i meant to say is that the British music Press and Media overate them (as you say, they do go banging on about them for decades)... :)

Hmmmm. I agree to an extent. But in my experience, it's not simply the press that are responsible for over-rating them. And, to be fair, a "ratings" system is totally subjective anyway. If we rate bands based on album sales, weeks on the chart or income from material that they have written; then maybe we can have an objective comparison between bands. Although why that would be necessary I cannot possibly imagine! :?

I wasn't referring to the media though - I was referring to people I know or have at least met who insist that the Beatles were the best band of all time. In my personal opinion, this is not necessarily true. But having said that, I would be struggling to come up with another band or musician that had been responsible for influencing so many others... So maybe they are the best after all?!

However, you can still be the best and be over-rated!

I have never understood why Bruce Springsteen is meant to be so good. I have heard 3 or 4 of his albums and they just left me cold. I don't like his voice. I don't like his music. I don't understand why so many music critics love him.
I've heard him interviewed and he seems like a nice guy.
People have even told me that I need to see him play live, but even when I see videos of him live it just doesn’t do anything for me. The only Springsteen song I have ever liked is one that he doesn’t sing “Blinded by the Light” by Manfred Man.
Am I in a minority ?

I wrote the above at the start of this thread.
However having seen Mr Springsteen perform at the Isle of Wight Festival I now reserve the right to change my mind.

I now get him.
In concert he works his socks off. He just doesnt stop for 3 hours. He gives 100% and constantly connects with his audience.
He comes accross as being very genuine and he really means what he is singing.
Also the songs gain a whole new dimension live.
Even his singing is clearer than the American drawl on record.
And he has a great band...all 17 of them ! including Steve Van Zandt and Nils Lofgren !

Ok there are still some songs that I'm not keen on but overall he's a great performer and now I can enjoy listening to his music.
