Diamond Jubilee

So what do people have planned - anything, nothing, what? Are you going to celebrate or just enjoy having a couple of extra days off?

Avoiding everything to do with the jubilee, would have preferred the late spring bank holiday when it shoukd have been, appreciate the extra days holiday, but know, come wednesday I'll hit a backlocg of emails from europe who already dont get us having two days off, and spending millions on sailing some boats down a river, whilst our Pratt Minister tells Europe we need to increase austerity measures.

I'm not anti royal, but what a waste of money.

Total cost of the pageant flotilla expected to be £13 million, and the cost to the economy for the long weekend into tine £100's of millions...

Thanks Queenie... Hope you're footing the bill..

We've escaped to Northumberland, as far fom London as we can, to stay with relatives. We will spend tomorrow with family, Monday walking along bits of Hadrian's wall, and Tuesday popping in onelderly relatives on the way home.

So despite not being overly keen, it's benefited you in some way in so far as you've had the opportunity to "escape" and relax a bit, even if it means going back to a backlog when you come back to reality. Looking at it from the other side, perhaps we live too much in the fast lane and a little slowing down to enjoy other stuff - if not jubilee related - can be the upside of this waste of money?

For me, I took a leisurely walk into town and just mosied around - something I just don't have time to do on a normal weekend - if I go into town at all, it's in the car and then I'm competing with other drivers for any available parking spaces. So I don't even bother as a rule. So it was just nice to go at a slower pace for a little while knowing I don't have to cram everything into the normal 2 days' break on a weekend.

And I'm looking forward to the lighting of the beacon and just doing something a little different., and walking into town again on Monday where there's a fair few bits and pieces happening - nothing costly, though, just stalls and gimmicks and stuff. I'm neither a Royalist nor an anti-Royalist and am just appreciating an extra break. :)

Think I'm like you Sharon. Neither pro or anti royal. Couldn't care less really, though I've nothing against people enjoying the weekend's celebrations, if that's what makes them happy in these current miserable times. - As Bob says, not sure you can justify the amount of money being spent/wasted, but if it's cheering people up, all well and good. - Pity the weather has taken a turn for the worse. :(

Won't be watching it on TV though. No interest personally.

We "escaped" to avoid a village celebration, organised for the over 70's or the under 12's , organised by the over 60's, the headline part of the celebrations being a dog show. :o

I would have preferred the day off on the bank holiday when it should have been, amd the sepatare extra day off for the jubilee, not the days combined...
I dont find myself relaxed at all... I don't feel any benefit... More displaced for the sake of being displaced, and unrelaxed as i know I'll end up having to squeeze 5 days work into 3 when i return, or rather 5 into 2 as I will be in Germany for a day on Thursday...

Bloody stupid idea by the government to shift the bank holiday which industrialists were against, but funnily enough the bankers were infavour of.

Same bankers we are paying for....

Me.

Definitely anti-royal. And by chance I have worked today, will work Sunday then nights Monday and Tuesday. Good job really otherwise I would feel a bit hypocritical. But we live in a democracy so if others believe in/support a Royal Family they have a right to go celebrate.

And it means after working all that I can go see someone a lot more important to me than that lot.

You know, sometimes I get so worn out by negativity.

This is a once in a lifetime event. You can choose to do whatever you want with it. Whatever you feel about the politics, this is one time you can get to choose what you want to do. Love her or hate her, the United Kingdom has had this woman on the Throne for 60 years. And that's one hell of an achievement. Whether you hate it or love it, it's a fact. How did that happen, do you think? It's not rocket science  We do pomp and ceremony unbelievably well. And the good feeling that generates is unbelievable. Okay, call me an idealist. But sometimes, we have to just do that. And stop and just take stock, no?

We are a long time dead. This is our history.

Hey, that is really interesting! A German newspaper wrote that 80% of the English people support having a queen. I just got to know a couple of the remaining 20% ;) If I were in England I would like to know what the celebrations are like - what people really think about the royals or if they just took the chance for a nice long weekend with picnics and stuff. It´s just part of your culture...

I am more far away from the jubilee than anybody else but I´d like to share something I saw in Bungay when Chris and me walked through town. Everything was decorated and there were advertisements for picnics and parties - but in one art supply shop I saw loads of portraits of the Queen. They were painted by students of a primary school and they had been asked to write something about "if I were King/Queen for a day". My personal favourite is King Tobias the first :D

If I were King for a day...
... I would people stop paying taxes. I would declare no more racism otherwise they would be thrown into prison!...for life!
I would feel on top of the world, I would buy myself a customized Bugatti Veyron. I would give poor people the money they need. I would set children free from school, I would put my family in charge of the government and I would like to be adressed as "Your Wiselyness"!!!!
I would stop nuclear power stations and put up more wind turbines. I would pass a law that people have to use renewable energy. I would stop bad language and make more people recycle. I would put out another law that say no more smoking or else! I would try to stop bullying for good throughout the world and I would tell soldiers to stop fighting and I would try to make the world a more peaceful place.

What a busy day
