And there, ladies and gentlemen, you have it. Stay tuned tomorrow for the next set of results... :D

Very interesting that of the top four tracks, one comes from each of the four Fish-era albums! How fair is that?! 8-)

Fascinating poll Dave. Sorry I didn't get the time to contribute to it, but as a relative newcomer to Fish's solo material I didn't feel I knew the stuff well enough to vote for it objectively. TBH, a lot of the stuff I ain't even heard!

Hello! No, actually I've been AFK (and asleep!) for a few days because I appear to have caught the plague! :(

Never fear, I'll be back soon (this weekend) with the last bit of the poll! ;) 8-)

Glad to hear you're alright Dave. My Fishy sense was tingling!

As for the pox - are we talking chicken or small?

Moving swiftly on...

We come to the end of the Fish songs poll with - drum roll please - THE TOP TEN:

[10] Credo (Points: 59, Votes: 11, Average: 5.36 points)

A great result for this particular old warhorse: clearly it doesn't all actually mean nothing to us after all.

[09] The Perception Of Johnny Punter (Points: 59, Votes: 12, Average: 4.92 points)

A favourite since its first live appearances in the mid/late 90s, apparently its appeal has not waned one bit. Deserved high props for one of the darkest and most rocking pieces of the piscine back catalogue!

[08] A Gentleman's Excuse Me (Points: 61, Votes: 10, Average: 6.1 points)

The first of no less than FOUR (count 'em!) tracks from Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors to make the top 10, the evergreen ballad can clearly still cast a spell even now.

[07] The Company (Points: 76, Votes: 14, Average: 5.43 points)

Another entry from Vigil, the song that lent its name to everything: the fans, the fanclub, the website... Still as popular as ever. The definitive drinking song? Either way, somewhere I'm sure Bob Ezrin is smiling! :D

[06] Shadowplay (Points: 77, Votes: 15, Average: 5.13 points)

Another entry from Internal Exile, albeit also the final one, the sophomore album saving its best for last. Hey, Mr Fish, how about it? I know you just love to perform this one, and it's been a while... ;)

[05] Raw Meat (Points: 85, Votes: 13, Average: 6.54 points)

The last entry from Suits makes it into the top 5! A clear favourite with everyone who voted for it, this paen to road warriors past and present gives a lie to the misguided belief that Suits is the album sat in the corner with the dunces cap on. It'll always find the strength to carry on!

[04] Vigil (Points: 100, votes: 15, Average: 6.67 points)

Our penultimate track from Vigil just narrowly fails to make the top 3, despite amassing a truly impressive 100 points.

[03] Dark Star (Points: 101, Votes: 13, Average: 7.77 points)

Our final entry from 13th Star rugby tackles Vigil to edge ahead by a single point(!). 101 points from only 13 votes - yow! 8-)

[02] Cliché (Points: 135, Votes: 19, Average: 7.11 points)

Our final entry from Vigil fails to top the poll, but check out the points tally here: Cliché, Yours Is No Disgrace! Frank's goosebump-inducing solo, that top-notch Fish vocal and a beautifully simple and heartfelt lyric married to create a genuine classic that still resonates as powerfully with fans now as it did at the time of release... 8-)

Which, of course, means our (very convincing, too) winner is:

[01] Plague Of Ghosts (Points: 182, Votes: 17, Average: 10.71 points)

Just check out the points total - nothing more needs to be said about how popular this monolithic piece of music is. Everything that makes Fish's music so memorable, emotive and powerful is pieced together here into a 20+ minute epic that clearly hits everyone's buttons. Far more people voted for this song than didn't, and almost everyone who voted for it gave it one of their highest scores. All hail Plague Of Ghosts!

In a minute I'll post all the separate Fish solo albums with their tracks gathered together in ranked order, as I did with the Marillion albums, for those who are insatiably curious/anal about such things... ;) 8-)

Wow - what a great poll!

Thanks for the scores and all your hard work Dave. Can't wait to see how the album rankings marry up!

Re: The Fish Xmas Poll 2008: The Results Are In!

Right then, let's cut to the chase: those Fish solo albums in reverse polling order!

9th - Songs From The Mirror (46 points, Average score: 2.19 points)

Well, it could only be, couldn't it? At the end of the day it's a bunch of covers, not Fish's own writing - and however good or bad we feel these new versions of old Fishy favourites are, it's probably not going to appeal to most of us in the same way that Fish's self-penned material does. On the other hand, the average score (out of a possible 5) isn't exactly unkind, bearing this in mind. Could it be that it's not as bad as we think we remember it? After all, more individual songs from Mirror were awarded votes than songs from Suits in the solo song poll...

That might have you thinking you know what's coming next - but you're going to be surprised!

8th - Fellini Days (58 points, Average score: 2.9 points)

This might seem like a bit of a shocker at first, but it should be pointed out that the albums received a reasonable number of extra points and that its average score is comfortably enough over the 50% mark - Mirror was the only album that fell short on that score). Judging from the points awarded to the songs individually, it could simply be that it's not thought of as a particularly consistent album - possibly a fair judgement, and the album's odd production values have been remarked upon before. Could this be the Fishy equivalent to Marillion's Radiation - the great album whose material only really comes into its own on stage?

Next up, we have:

7th - Suits (60 points, Average score: 2.86 points)

A slight oddity here, in that Suits actually mustered more points, despite having a very slightly lower average than Fellini Days - perfectly feasible, just one of those flukes of statistics. For all the questions about the material and the sound of the album, it seems we're still happy enough with Suits, since once again it made it past the magical 50% marker in terms of its average score. As with Fellini Days, perhaps it's just an uneven album, only with slightly more consistent production. Or perhaps someone just likes No Dummy and upped their awarded points for its parent album accordingly? Er... no, it seems pretty far-fetched to me too! ;)

6th - Field Of Crows (66 points, Average score: 3.3 points)

Again, perhaps a surprise here to see an album oft cited by the faithful as a 'return to form' after the uneven reaction to Fellini lying in 6th place, but please note the jump in score and - especially - average score. A 3.3 average is nothing to sniff at compared with what we've already seen. Why so low placed, though? Could be just the uneveness factor once again, judging from the votes awarded to the songs - even a fan favourite like this contained two songs that failed to attract any votes...

Into the top 5, then...

5th - Internal Exile (75 points, Average score: 3.57 points)

I think probably everything I've just said about Field Of Crows applies to this album too, although in this case we've had longer to grow into the songs - that, a scattering of firm fan favourite tracks, and fond memories of the associated tour and its outlandish stage production probably all combined to give Exile a leg up into the top 5.

4th - Sunsets On Empire (78 points, Average score: 3.71 points)

What's this? Sunsets outside the top 3? Has the world gone mad? Well, perhaps that's an overstatement, but I admit I was rather surprised. Then again, perhaps the clue was in the song poll, where once again there were a couple of tracks that let an otherwise very strong set of songs down a little on the votes front. It should also be reiterated (before Mr Mitchell comes along and does it) that not everyone liked what Steven Wilson brought to the writing and/or production of the album. Clearly popular, then - there are more albums under it than above it, after all - but no cigar for Sunsets this time out!

Which brings us to the Top 3... so in a vain and probably futile attempt to generate some tension, I'll leave it there until tomorrow! ;)
