This just played on the radio - cue dancing round kitchen with bemused Bertrand [cat] in my arms, laughing at the stair-rod rain pelting down outside...
"Fisherman's Blues" - The Waterboys
I wish I was a fisherman tumbling on the seas far away from dry land and its bitter memories casting out my sweet line with abandonment and love no ceiling bearing down on me save the starry sky above with Light in my head and you in my arms
I wish I was the brakeman on a hurtling, fevered train crashing headlong into the heartland like a cannon in the rain with the beating of the sleepers and the burning of the coal counting the towns flashing by in a night that's full of soul with Light in my head and you in my arms
I know I will be loosened from the bonds that hold me fast that the chains all hung around me will fall away at last and on that fine and fateful day I will take me in my hands I will ride on the train I will be the fisherman

Me too
Definitely the most popular band in our house at the moment ! On SUnday I must have played "In a Pagan Place" at least 3 times. I love Red Army Blues.
Zaz was so impressed by them when we went to see them in Hammersmith that she went and ordered 2 tickets to see them in St Albans later this month !
Our latest CD arrived yesterday called Cloud of Sound which is a limited edition new CD of unreleased Waterboys songs signed by Mike Scott !

Tramp The Dirt Down - Elvis Costello
I saw a newspaper picture from a political campaign A woman was kissing a child Who was obviously in pain She spills with compassion, as that young child's Face in her hand she grips Can you imagine all that greed and avarice Coming down on that child's lips
Well I hope I don't die too soon I pray the lord my soul to save Oh, I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live Long enough to savour That's when they finally put you in the ground I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down
When England was the whore of the world Margaret was her madam And the future looked as bright and as clear As black tarmacadam Well I hope that she sleeps well at night Isn't haunted by every tiny detail 'Cos when she held that lovely face in her hands All she thought of was betrayal
And now the cynical ones say that it all ends The same in the long run Try telling that to the desperate father who just Squeezed the life from his only son And how it's only voices in your head And dreams you never dreamt Try telling him the subtle difference Between justice and contempt Try telling me she isn't angry With his pitiful discontent When they flaunt it in your face As you line up for punishment And then expect you to say 'thankyou' Straighten up, look proud and pleased Because you've only got the symptoms You haven't got the whole disease Just like a schoolboy, whose head's like a tin-can Filled with dreams, then poured down the drain Try telling that to the boys on both sides Being blown to bits or beaten and maimed Who takes the glory and none of the shame
Well I hope you live long now I pray the lord your soul to keep I think I'll be going before we fold our arms And start to weep I never thought for a moment That human life could be so cheap 'Cos when they finally put you in the ground They'll stand there laughing And tramp the dirt down

Happy memories of simpler times, circa late 80s - I know the song is from an earlier period, but it became very significant during that time.
"Follow You Follow Me" - Genesis
Stay with me, My love I hope you'll always be Right here by my side if ever I need you Oh my love
In your arms, I feel so safe and so secure Everyday is such a perfect day to spend Alone with you
I will follow you will you follow me All the days and nights that we know will be I will stay with you will you stay with me Just one single tear in each passing year
With the dark, Oh I see so very clearly now All my fears are drifting by me so slowly now Fading away
I can say The night is long but you are here Close at hand, oh I'm better for the smile you give And while I live
I will follow you will you follow me All the days and nights that we know will be I will stay with you will you stay with me Just one single tear in each passing year there will be

Cheers, Paul!!!
God, how I hate that woman and I've never even met her - there are very few people I literally hate [it's a horrible emotion, I try not to give in to it too often] but That Cow really is at the top of My List.... when she said that there was no such thing as Society, that sealed her fate for me and I have loathed and despised her ever since.
Don't give a monkey's about her positive achievements as, for me, they are all cancelled out by her f*ck ups, banning schoolkids' milk [who can forget those dinky milkbottles, that first suck on the straw and the creamy bit on the top - shame on her!] and getting drunk on power [and hairspray probably - that hair never moved a milimetre]
AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
[But really - ta for the clips Paul - excellent!]

Favourite Lyrics of all time / that stick with you

Couldn't see a thread on this topic so forgive me if there is already one going. What are your Favourite Lyrics and why? There are a lots that go round in my head but David Bowie / Mott the Hoople. All The Young Dudes.
"Television man is crazy saying were juvenile deliquent wrecks Oh man I need tv when I got T Rex."
It reminds me of my teenage years when Music was the be all and end all.
Paul McCartney / The Beatles The end Abbey Road
"And In the end the love you take is equal to the love you make"
It is just sublime. This lyric should be the 11th commandment. It gives me hope.
Well there are two of mine, let me know some of yours.
Peace.

Fair enough, I somehow managed to not see the thread Lyrically speaking. Wood for trees springs to mind

I heard this on the radio yesterday - an extraordainary song, sung fairly quietly by Lemmy alone [who also wrote the lyrics]; just unbelieveable, really unexpected from Motorhead:
"1916"
16 years old when I went to the war, To fight for a land fit for heroes, God on my side, and a gun in my hand, Counting my days down to zero, And I marched and I fought and I bled and I died, And I never did get any older, But I knew at the time that a year in the line, Is a long enough life for a soldier,
We all volunteered, and we wrote down our names, And we added two years to our ages, Eager for life and ahead of the game, Ready for history's pages, And we brawled and we fought and we whored 'til we stood, Ten thousand shoulder to shoulder, A thirst for the Hun, we were food for the gun, And that's what you are when you're soldiers,
I heard my friend cry, and he sank to his knees, Coughing blood as he screamed for his mother, And I fell by his side, and that's how we died, Clinging like kids to each other, And I lay in the mud and the guts and the blood, And I wept as his body grew colder, And I called for my mother and she never came, Though it wasn't my fault and I wasn't to blame, The day not half over and ten thousand slain, And now there's nobody remembers our names, And that's how it is for a soldier
