DSoM is revered, and quite rightly, as a consumate concept album, but I think MC and CaS edge it, depsite spending a night with fingers pressed over play/record for the Friday Rock Show to record a live version of DSoM.

Comparing MC with CaS, I lean to MC. CaS has much to praise, but I feel White Russian doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the album. I'd be intrigued to hear anyone elses thought on that, the rest of the album seems (to me) to be a searingly personal document and that track just doesn't go.

I do remember, on first hearing CaS thinking to myself 'that's that, how the hell are they gonna follow it'..... and sure enough, they didn't.

Hi voxbox, thats a good opinion, about CaS but then again does incommunicado go? or Jigsaw on Fugazi, or expresso bongo on MC! They dont, but they do!(if that makes sense? :D )
The only reason i did say Dark Side was from a commercial aspect, not personal choice! as for me MC was brilliant at the time, as was CaS, but i now actually now play CaS more! So that just edges it! :D
It would have been intriguing to see what Seasons End would have been like, with Fish's lyrics! :D
Anyway can't wait for N-DUBZ new concept album!
All the best Spolly(aka John)

Do you not have the CaS remaster then?

And it would have been called Vigil not SE, the name(and even the cover art) had been decided before the split).

Agreed. I was shot down in flames a few months ago for daring to suggest that! The track has slightly grown on me since then, but it is still my least favourite Marillion track - despite the second half doing its best to save it! It's interesting that the rhythm and feel of the track is revisited on the track "The Space..." on Season's End. For me it doesn't grate as much then... :o

As I've said before, my own personal feeling is that MC does indeed stand up better as a complete work than CaS - but needs to be listened to as a whole for this to work. On the other hand, CaS contains the better individual tracks (with the obvious exception of the aforementioned!). Swings and roundabouts, horses for courses - choose your metaphor ladies and gentlemen! ;)

With knowledge like that, is it any wonder why we mere mortals stand very little chance in the "Perpetual Fish Quiz"?? :D

I don't have the remastered version of CaS - to which tracks do you refer Max? And is the remaster worth purchasing purely to own them?

The two disc remaster features several songs recorded post CaS/pre-split which include Lyrics used on Vigil along with the music that ended up on SE.
It can really throw you off the first time you hear Family Business sung with the music to Berlin (Story from a thin wall) etc.

Have a look towards the bottom of this page

I've always preferred MC to CAS - MC has grown on me over the years and as a complete album I think it's far superior - I rarely listen to CAS as an album, but rather as individual tracks.
Sorry but I like White Russian ;)
