Heres the place to talk about Fish in general

13th Star reviews

Thu Feb 28, 2008 12:11 pm

I'm asking for a bit of help here - we're looking for reviews of '13th Star' and/or the 'Arc' single, particularly from magazines and newspapers. We already have quite a lot of on-line reviews but they're mostly written by - if you'll excuse the expression - members of the public, what we're looking for are those written by journalists.
If the review is on a web site, please post the address here. If it's printed, please type it out and include the name of the paper/magazine, the name of the reviewer and the date of publication.

Any reviews in languages other than English are welcome, but please include a translation to English for me so that I can publish both.

Thanks!
Mo

Mo, there is one in the April edition of Q by Paul Elliott who gives the album Three stars out of 5 .

'Many Stars Have Made Divorce albums, But This Is Different. Fish-49 Year Old Scotsman Derek Dick - Conceived his eigth solo release as a 'celebration' of his forthcoming marriage, but he never made it to the altar.
Consequently,13th Star developed into a meditation on Loss, the emotional resonance of songs such as Arc Of The Curve making this his strongest work since his late 80's Marillion swansong 'Clutching At Straws'.
The music is reminiscent of his hero Peter Gabriel, his lyrics, admirably ,are free of the bitter recriminations that his ex may have feared'

Well I guess that's as good as it gets from Q for Fish! I bet he wanted to give it 4 starts really but it would have been asking too much... ;D

q are not as influencial as they used to be but that is a well balanced review and fair copy proportionate to the effect fish will have on their readership. classic rock gave it 7, similar marks and similar positive vibes.

i would have thought a 3 star review and the positive review could even end up getting a gig review later in the year. though, of course, that would then be totally slated :)

Former Marillion frontman Derek Dick better known as Fish has created quite the classic Prog Rock spectacular in 13th Star. With almost 30 years experience in the industry we should not be surprised by the high quality of music.

Fish handles the vocals, while Steve Vantsis plays and programs just about every instrument and gizmo known to man, Frank Usher plays a mean guitar, and Foss Patterson handles the ivories, Piano, Organ, accordion, etc. Yes I did say accordion, which is an instrument not usually associated with the Prog Rock genre, but neither is the squeeze box or the dulcimer, but Frank manages to ’squeeze’ all of these instruments into his performance.

The band is rounded out with Gavin Griffiths on drums, Chris Johnson on guitars, Dave Haswell percussion, and Lorna Bannon supplying some backing vocals.

This is sophisticated music, 13th Star is well laid out and skillfully constructed. Although this is a studio album, I think this group of skilled musicians could pull it off live.

With 4 albums with Marillion and 8 on his own, the name 13th Star may seem an obvious title for this album. That is not the case though. The name refers to women that have influenced his life, Mother, ex wife, girlfriends, etc.

I used to read imports of Q and that's as high praise as one could get, however "reminiscent of Gabriel"? I love PG as well but just don't hear that in 13th Star at all.
