Re: Back in time - Any idea how a new album sounds?

Back in the good old days I heard most of Marillion's new songs played live before they made it to vinyl.
WIth Script I knew all the songs almost word perfect apart from The actual title track which noone knew as it hadnt been played before.

I remember when they played the whole of side 1 of Misplaced Childhood before the album came out.

With some artists I'm willing to take a risk buying an album without hearing any of it before hand.

In the old days you always had a couple of singles out before the main album was released.

Apparently album sales are very low at the moment, probably partly due to people just buying tracks they like on itunes etc....
People dont seem to be willing to immerse themselves in albums any more which is a shame.

Too True andy!

Remember that well listening to MC(side 1) played live before it a came out as the album and A LOT DIFFERENT (got it on bootleg :D :D ) as well, as you say rember the single/s getting brung out first to promote the forthcoming album. Even remember some artists albums being promoted on small advertisements on TV.

Don't know about the i tunes thing? as i have never purchased anything of this nature, i prefer buy and listen to a whole album and have the cd or vinyl in my hands, not just for the music but for the artwork(especially where mr willkinson is concerned) :D :D

I bought a one song on iTunes. "Down to Earth" by Peter Gabriel, no chance to get the song on CD before the soundtrack was released

Fish is the ultimate pro. He's been doing this for over thirty years! Whatever decisions he makes will be for the right reasons and the results will be worth waiting for - even if we have to wait a bit longer than expected. But hey, it's been five years now anyway so another few weeks won't hurt will they? ;)

I often feel that "fan pressure" must be such a hard burden on artists at times - they want to get their new material just right [for themselves and their fans] but are aware that expectation is high, esp when they haven't released a new album for a few years.

Personally, I would rather wait until the new album is sorted to the satisfaction of the artist and then hear it as it was always meant to sound, knowing they are happy with it and that it expresses what they are trying to say, conveys the right emotions etc.

As Geoff says, Fish is such a pro and we all know that he is doing whatever is right for his head and heart - with the intention of pleasing both himself and the fans and that is the key thing to bear in mind IMHO. It is similar to the old days, when anticipation of a new album on the back of a couple of singles was part of the fun - going into town to buy it and then spending the afternoon being blown away and then playing it all over again..... and again the next day until your parents have to crowbar you out of your room to go and have your dinner....

As an out and out Kate Bush fan, I'm used to waiting for long years until the next album and it is always worth the wait..... quality not quantity! :D

It doesn't really bother me how much or what excerpts of the album are ready for leamington, although it would be something else if it were all ready! Supposed i was just used to listening to skeletons or 3/4 finished New tracks from marillion over the years before the finished article came to vinyl. In a interesting kind of a way i kinda like it, upon when hearing these unfinished tracks, then pondering over them wondering how these tracks will be tweaked, pushed and pulled into the finished article. Which when done like this keeps the fans interested right up untill the album does come out as we will still not know for definite, or what to expect the finished article to sound like.

MC was a big stand out for me when Fish/marillion done this, the unfinished (side1) they played on the Real to Reel tour i found obvoiusly very different but still Mesmerising to listen too, so if what we hear at leamington comes close to this i will be well happy!

As for the fan pressure bit i am not sure about this, as Fish put the date and time forward himself for the album, i remember commenting on a previous thread (think Mar! agreed with me) that we thought that maybe Fish was taking too much on himself regrads to the convention, merchandising, promoting and the New tour, orignally in such a small space of time.

That said, i suppose it s purley hypathetical, as long as the Fish and the band are there( all in good health) then thats all that counts in the end, doing what they do best "Making movies for your ears" as Fish says! :D :D :D
