Do our partners like Fish and prog?

All kinds of stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else

My wife, for my sadness, isn't keen on Marillion or Fish.
Well, in fact, before she met me, her musical universe was very narrow. i was able to pass her some new references, and made her to enjoy other musicians and sounds, but not as much as i would like. She is very mainstreamed, hates heavy metal, speedy electric guitars, and she's indiferent towards more elaborated music, like prog or simphonic rock. I think the only musician i introduced her that she really fell in love with was 'Black'. One day she heard Black's song "Sweetest smile", and after that "Ravel in the rain" and went totally nuts about him.
In fact, i should thank Black (now known as Colin Vearncombe) for some really interesting nights i had with my wife, in account of "Sweetest smile".

motheroftwoboys wrote:Hi there Lisbonfreak. If you haven't already got Marc's new (ish) album Variete then go out and buy it! It is brilliant! did you know that Marc covers one of Peter Hammill's songs - "Vision"? I like all sorts of music but have a particular fondness for 80s stuff - Soft Cell, Pet Shop Boys, Eurythmics etc. Also love Meat Loaf, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Pink floyd and all manner of other stuff. Definitely an eclectic music collection. Fish tops the lot at the moment though. You might envy me next week's concert but I most definitely envy you the sun!

Yes, i'm quite a 80's guy myself, wich is normal for old chaps like us, around the fourties.
I only have two vinyls from Marc (Stars we are and Enchanted) and two CDs (Treasure box and Open all night). I haven't search for new stuff from him for quite a while, now. Didn't know that he had a new record. I can't buy them all, though. Buying records is a addiction, for me. I have music to fill my ears for the next decades, in non-stop mode. I have CD and vinyls i don't use for years and years, and i like them! Some of them were played 3 or 4 times, only. But, this conversation opened my apettite, so i'm going to catch up on what Marc is being doing lately. Thanks! :)

Black!! Now there is a coincidence Wonderful Life and Just Making Memories are two of "our songs" along with Sign Your Name by Terence Trent Derby.

Actually,I really LOVE a good brass band, my other half thinks I'm weird for this, but, as Bob says, if like, listen, if not, dont-I really think if you love music, you have an open mind.-then say its crap. ;)
As soon as you realise, I'm perfectly happy, if I'm left to decide the company I choose.

Mrs SE13 will listen to early Marillion if it's on, particularly Misplaced Childhood and she did agree that our first daughter would be named Kayleigh, but she's more of a 70's C&W fan, and she also puts that sodding Shania Twain on far too much for my liking.

I was thinking about this and the term 'pop'.

If we like Marillion in the eighties, or Genesis or even Floyd does that not make us fans of some pop (as in popular) music.......... :)

Good question, but the like of the mentioned bands didn't quite attract (say) Duran Duran accolades, where every second record was the popular bands of the time, yet "Kayleigh" racing up the charts was heard once in a blue moon because the band had long hair yadda yadda.

I remember being in Edinburgh at the time Pallas released "The Sentinel" and WH Smith was a Pallas heaven that particular day, and the very place that made me notice their existence. Yet they never got radio airtime because it just wasn't fashionable at the time, it had to be the Simon Le Bon look, all clean cut etc for Radio 1 and Capital to take bands seriously. Don't get me wrong, I'd quite as happily listen to "pop" or as it's now known "mainstream" at the time, I've even got some Duran Duran in my vinyl collection, I'm one of those people that buys a record if I like it.

That said, has anyone listened to Radio 1 these days? What utter dross! And that's the music of the future? God help us all!

Some girls have all the luck ... Marc Almond, hmmm? Well... i must be part of the half a dozen guys in Portugal that know that Marc is still alive and kicking after Soft Cell. One of my favorite voices ever, so melodic, so sweet (don't start to think i'm gay,ok? :D ) , great songwriter too. He made some great, almost perfect quality pop albuns since the 80's , like "The Stars we are" and "Enchanted", and even darker records like "Open all night" are great. Never saw him live, 'cause he never came to Portugal, at least in the last 15 ou 20 years. You don´t know how much i envy you, girl! It's though to be peripheric. We have the sun, the beach, the food, the wine, but ... no Marc Almond, and rarely Fish (except in the ocean).

Hey LF! - What makes you think we don't have good food and wine?!! :o
:D   - The cheek of it!

I gave you a thanks because you made me laugh! - We'll trade you Marc Almond for a bit of Portuguese sunshine any day!

Of course i know you have good food and wine. Your food is good. Ours is better. ;) In fact some say that the portuguese have the best food in the world, in taste, quality and variety. And the wine ... well...chances are that you drink a lot of what is made here.
It's easy to prove it: search the Net for descriptions of trips to Portugal (or Lisbon, or Porto, or Algarve). Almost every one can't help but to talk about the food. Strangely, the same doesn't happen when the subject is a trip to England.
This is a curse, my friend. The food, the wine, the warm wheater and the beaches, are the main reasons why the portuguese people and governments are unable to take care of this country. There is just to much distractions in a regular days work.
