Holiday Destinations

All kinds of stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else

We've been debating a week in a hired caravan/chalet in Yarmouth or similar as funds are on the tight side.

We went a couple of years ago, and the kids had a blast and have been nagging to go back ever since.

Not being funny, but these 'deals' in the Sun are ok, I know someone who had a long break from one, think it was Devon, but a good holiday park, all facilities, cheap as anything-check it out when they start?
As soon as you realise, I'm perfectly happy, if I'm left to decide the company I choose.

Yep, damn right they are! It's worth buying that particular paper for the deals alone! Last year one of the breaks they offered was exactly the same place and same time as one we had planned on going to, but that operation I had put paid to the timing, so we scrapped the idea.

Can't remember the exact figures, but the saving by using the vouchers as opposed to booking direct was enormous. I'd recommend for sure.

Ye, I know my friends thought it was great, and well cheap.

There's a bit more to it than the advertised £7.50, but when you consider the cost of booking direct, you really can't go wrong. Those holiday parks they use are great too, we went on a Parkdean venue, they cater specifically for children through the day with plenty of staff and activities all in the price.

For a family the size of ours, it's splendid value for money, and as a person who has been, I really do think it's worthwhile.

Fair comment Simon :D

There isn't a lot there, and inbetween towns there's actually bugger all, except for small holdings.
It amazes me that there are no rivers on Santorini and water is a scarce thing to come by, but they manage to sustain themselves. Some of it is even brought in by Tanker Ships, good god i wouldn't drink that, thats for sure :o

Anyway. . . . it's a get away place and there is not much there. Lots of Greek Islands are like this, and Island Hopping is popular for this reason.

Yes, Mar i imagine Stratford is very nice in late April

One possibility is Santorini

I've been to Santorini a couple of times Arcade and it's well worth a visit. It also fits a lot of your criteria too.

You've obviously seen photos of Santorini, as it's the most Photographed of all the Greek islands.
"Thira" the main town on the Island hangs precariously on the edge of the Caldera, caused by the Volcano that blew the island into the shape it is today, and also was part responsibe for the demise of the Minoan Civillisation of Knossos on neighbouring Crete.
The views of the Caldera are spectacular and you can also go across to Nea Kanemi, which is the Active part of the Volcano, and climb to the top. It's all Sulphur and smoke up there. . it's a good trip :)
On the North tip of the Island is the town of Oia, which is famous for it's Sunsets, and on the Southern edge you will find Akrotiri, which is the site of a ongoing excavation from the Minoan period. They have been digging out two story buildings still intact. . . It's quite a sight :D

Night life is okay, but neighbouring Ios is where the party is at :D

The local Wine and Cherry Tomatos' are both worth a punt too. The island does have an airport, but it's easy to get to from either Athens or Iraklion too. Approaching by boat is much more pretty, than the hair raising landing you will experience by flying in.

I'm off to New York myself this year :D

Thanks for that Squeak! - I must admit, we are still leaning towards the Greek islands. To me fascinating history and i've always wanted to see Akrotiri. - We couldn't care less about nightlife, seeing as we both like old-men's pubs, log fires and cosy corners. :D

This year we're off to Stratford Upon Avon and Warwick on a barge for a week. Peace and quiet and beautiful countryside. :D
