Being a bone idle Steelworker and slowly starting to enjoy my day's off I thought I would let you into why / where I was when I was bitten by the Marillion / Fish bug
During a particular non event night shift one of me mates threw a " cassette " onto the player, it was the Fugazi album, listened to it for most of the shift - I do have to work sometimes you know lol -
The track that hit me straight away was " Punch and Judy " - I was in a relationship that needed ended because of the agro that we were constantly giving each other - I didn't want us to end up being physically with each other and the track was the one that put things into perspective for me , following afternoon we talked and funnily enough we both agreed to split.
Credo was another track that has meanings for me
Does a particular Fish / Marillion track bring back memories ?

There are so many memories, it is hard to name just one.
I will say that "Script for a Jester's Tear" hits me hard everytime I hear it. Listening to the lyrics throw me into nostalgic interlude, simply because they remind me of my first love. I can hear him saying those words to me over and over again--"can you still say you love me?"

You would have made a fine life, but something inside screams "NO!!"

'Childhoods End' always struck a big chord with me.Hope this doesn't sound naff, but I did have a disruptive and uncomfortable childhood (I am not the only one) and the lyrics in 'Childhoods End' really affected me, for example: 'And I found myself mourning, For a childhood that I thought had disappeared'.
I also found great hope in the song: 'So I see it's me, I can do anything And I'm still the child 'Cos the only thing misplaced was direction And I found direction' etc (these lyrics have been cut and pasted). There could be triumph over adversity.
I've always admired the way (imho) Fish with Marillion tackled the uncomfortable, melancholy and vulnerable side of the human spirit, not withcounting the positive aspects!

Thanks to a memory stirred back to life by a previous post on another thread, Grendel always reminds me of listening to a tiny little radio under my pillow when I was about 15, tuned into Tommy Vance's Friday Rock Show.... and mate at school called Paul who lent me a cassette copy of Real to Reel!
I want a drink, I want a drink. To take all the dust and the dirt from my throat. I want a drink, I want a drink. To wash out the filth that is deep in my guts.... I want a drink.

Re: Song memories
For me the hairs stand up on my neck now, as they did the first time I ever heard it, for the Misplaced Childhood song where he's meeting the prostitute "Blue Angel" and then again when the guitar kicks in for the start of "Vocal Under A Bloodlight" which to me seems to be a continuation of the same theme.
I was sold instantly on Marillion and strangely enough my other favourite song is "Lady Nina." I've not got an obsession with prostitutes(!!) but I think it's the depth of sadness he has with himself that is so low yet he see's himself as a her possible saviour. It's tragic and beautiful at once.
My other choice would have to be "Script for a Jester's Tear" - again the lyrical beauty, the clever use of words to contrast/conflict (morning/mourning etc) and to twist (Prince into Frog not vice versa) emphasize a pure tragedy that is utterly compelling to listen to.
God this man is a lyrical genius.

Re: Song memories
has to be clutching at straws for me . i became a marillion and fish fan by total fluke . i put on the radio and came across the dj playing incommunicado . fell in love with the song and a while later , on a family holiday to eng;and , got the album . i was 13 years old , it blew me away . never heard music like it before . the lyrics fish wrote and sang and the musicianship of the rest of the band were class . i caught up with the bands back catalogue on cassette ( well it was the late 80's !) i have been addicted from that day to this .

Re: Song memories
For me, it was almost a complete cliché. I had a friend at school who happened to like similar music to me at the time. Pink Floyd, Genesis etc. He said "If you like Genesis, you'll like these..." and did me a C90 with Misplaced Childhood on one side and Script on the other.
I remember vividly, the opening bars of PSK, Fish's angst tight vocals. I would never have guessed at the time he would be a 6-foot-odd Scotsman!
This was in the late 90's, and I think that MC had the added advantage of me thinking, I know these songs... Maybe because the hits felt familiar - it helped me to quickly gel with it. It was the best of times and the worst of times for me. But growing up generally did.
Over the next year or two, Marillion knocked Genesis off the top slot for my favourite band. R10 was released, Sunsets was out. I had Vigil which blew me away, and slowly my catalogue of things Marillion and Fish grew.
Some classic memories:
After having a bad day I was sat in the living room in my flat. Glass in one hand, bottle of vodka in the other and MC playing on the CD player.
Having a heated discussion over the use of Homonyms by Fish in Script. Most noticeably the "Promised wedding now awake" line
My flatmate asking a friend if I actually listened to anything else (while Vigil was playing).
Ahh, memories!
