Or Sounds magazine. Any one remember Fish gracing the cover?

And as we had no internet to find out about live dates I would often nip into WHSmith and 'borrow' Melody Maker et al for a couple of minutes to peer through the live ads..... :D

I loved hearing the "work in progress" on the Real To Reel tour in '84, and I don't think it spoiled the experience of getting Misplaced Childhood six months later.

What is infuriating (which is why I would no longer indulge) is the 30 second sound clip, which ruins the flow when you hear the full song.

I did enjoy the 'Fish on Friday' drip-feeding of 13th Star. There weren't too many surprises left when the album came out but it didn't spoil the experience for me one bit.

Me too. Not sure it did much for album sales though - if it only shifted around 40,000 copies. Allowing for all the fans buying it (sometimes several copies!) that doesn't seem to be many new fans brought in through radio airplay...

the poor sales were mainly due to downloaders and pirates......

Aye. They sailed up the Tyne and plundered the Fish Shop stocks. Bastards.

That's where hardly ever listening to the radio comes in handy for me, since there is only a very small chance that I will hear song releases before an album comes out. Or if I do, maybe it is just one or two songs. I usually do not pre-download as I would rather wait to have the physical album for the first listen. It is hard sometimes, but I try to wait.

I LOVE the anticipation of a new album, but I agree, it is hard to recreate that today.
