Things you always wanted to ask Fish

Please read this thread and look at Fish's answers to find out if your question has already been asked. If it hasn't, please add it at the end of this topic by clicking the "Post reply" button.
When Fish answers a question, this thread will be locked temporarily while the question and answer are moved into a new topic. If this thread is locked, please wait a moment or two and then try again.
If you have more than one question to ask, please make more than one post so that Fish can quote your question with an answer.
When a question has been answered and is in a new topic, please don't ask another question below that - use this thread.

Could I please ask everyone to take note of the fact that this topic is only for asking Fish a question.

If you want to add a comment, please do so AFTER Fish has answered or in another thread, not this one. The questions and answers will be split into new topics very quickly so please wait until they've been separated.

If you want to answer someone's question, please do so by private message to them. Questions have been asked here for Fish to answer.

This might sound a bit strict (sorry! ) but please consider that Fish reads through for questions to answer and has to trawl through chatter to find them! Also, members have taken the time to add a question only to see it disappear into the distance. Please be considerate!

Comments and chatter will be deleted from this thread from now on. Thanks everyone! :hatoff:

Well, I did a search and couldn't find the answer. In Misplaced Childhood you mention Milo, I was curious who he was?

I know at one point you were friends with Bruce Dickinson, are you still friends? If so, any chance of a collaboration?

Life and soul

Postby Legion on Mon Apr 25, 2011 9:44 pm

Hello Fish,
Ok I will get the usual out of the way 1st. You are amazing, I 1st heard your voice when I was a mere 6 years old from my older sister's tape deck and sat upon the ground in silence. Now 35 I look back at my life so far and see that you have been with me every step of the way. At the age of 19 I joined the Royal Marines and became a commando in 539 assault squadron. I went to war I did the worst any human could do, I went to hell and back and you came with me. No matter where I was in the world you and your music where there to pull me through. Years later I was walking through Dantzic street Manchester one fine Morning and the IRA let off a controlled device, I was thrown feet in the air and landed hard in the gutter with glass falling all around me. When I came round it was to Credo playing through a headphone still lodged in my ear. Still the years pass and I became a father, my precious daughter held in my arms, a war hardened man yet I still cried at the joy of my little girl, as I walked out of the hospital you where there again as Tara played in my car on the way home. All this waffle and where is my question? Well it's just simply this.
Are you aware of how many hearts and souls you have touched in your life, do you know that people around world have listened to your advice, your every word? I'm sorry that two little words like "thank you" will never come close to what you have meant to me.
With the utmost respect, yours
Jonathan

Yo Fish.. :)

Question: How thick a skin have you had to have over the years?

Let me put that in context.. I started a small wildlife group to monitor the return of the dolphins to the River Tay estuary.. I took a stand on encouraging 'shore-based' watching as the dolphins were coming into the estuary to feed and the many boats were disturbing them. I even 'named and shamed' boats that were the worst offenders. For this I recieved a barrage of abuse that required me to have a very thick skin.

Throughout the years, through your lyrics you have also taken some principled stands... Just how thick has your skin had to be??? Is there one in particular for which you recieved a bucketload of abuse???

All the best
Allan

Subject: Where's the pub in the 'Heart of Lothian' vid???

Hi there Fish and fellow Fish-heads,
This has been bugging me for ages:
Does anyone know the name and address of the pub which appeared in the 1985 video clip for 'Heart of Lothian'?
I know it was near the Westway in West London, not in Edinburgh (as the song lyrics might have suggested).
I also know that the barman in the clip was played by Glynn Johns (who portrayed the publican Dave in the TV series 'Minder') and the doorman was played by Aylesbury musician John Otway.
I don't think it's the same pub that doubled as 'The Winchester' in the 'Minder' TV series, though; here's a site which shows some photos of that, and none of them look similar to the pub in the 'Heart of Lothian' video to me:
http://www.minder.org/locations/loc_winchester.htm
The clip was directed by Francis Megahy... but where was it shot?
RSVP, and you'll make another Fish-head very happy!
Cheers, YT

Re: A Fish Time Machine

Postby grembel on Sun May 15, 2011 1:20 am

Hi Fish.

I've just watched the Old Grey Whistle Test Fish vinyl collection on YouTube.
Never saw it before. Missed it first time around.
Think it was post 'Fugazi', pre 'Misplaced Childhood'
You look so young, eager, enthusiastic, hungry, unscathed.

If you could comandeer a tardis/time machine back to then, what advice would you give that young Fish fellow?

Just For The Record - Live

Postby percy72 on Mon May 16, 2011 8:35 am

Hi there - one Marillion era question,
I believe you performed each and every Marillion album track (and most B-sides as well) live except Just For The Record - why?
By the way I think it is a wonderful song, one of my all time favourites still after all these years...
Thanks for all the great work over the years. Your magic is still working...
Percy
P.S. Do you remember the Vienna concert back in 1986? Thank you for a life-changing experience...
